What’s the difference? Skin tones can change: think of the color difference after you get a tan. Undertone doesn’t change. It’s the base color that lies beneath the skin – kind of like a shadow below your skin color. And while your skin tone can be ivory or golden or mocha, your undertone can only either be cool, warm, or neutral. Once you’ve determined your undertone (click here to find out how), only then can you find the best makeup shades to suit your skin. Here are some of my faves for each type of undertone.
Peach. Olive. Caramel. No, I’m not talking about food here — these are all words you might use to describe skin tones. And while these words do help in choosing the most flattering foundation or eye shadow, there’s another important factor that we have to consider: undertone.

Moisturizer and foundation – Sometimes beauty brands do all the work for you, like Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer, which is a smooth moisturizer with swatches that tell you what’s best suited to each skin tone. If your product’s color swatches are a little more elusive, keep your eye out for certain key words. If you’ve got cool undertones, look for makeup with shades like porcelain, sable, and cocoa. Warm undertones will have names like beige, golden, tan, caramel and chestnut. Think you’ve got a neutral undertone? Stick to ivory, buff, nude, or praline. NARS Sheer Glow Foundation has a wide range of shades for every undertone.
Lip color – With lipstick, undertones can actually alter the appearance of the lip color — kind of like an optical illusion. Say you want a classic red lipstick – if you have cool undertones, that red might look too warm on you; if you’re warm-toned, the red will look too dull. To avoid lip color clashing with your cool tone, go a half step cooler — a little more pink. Warm toned? Go a half step warmer, like a red with a little bit of orange. If you’re neutral, you’re in luck — your undertone won’t affect the appearance of lipstick, and what you see is what you get. MAC Lipsticks have the slightest tweaks in shade offerings, which means dozens of opportunities to find the perfect one for your tone.
Eye color – When it comes to eye makeup, it gets a little tricky: you also have eye color to think about! You can go the complimentary color route, choosing an opposite shade from your eye color so your eyes really pop. If you want to consider undertone too though, the tip to remember is: stick with colors that match your undertone. It can also mean trying out some summer hacks to ensure your vacays and adventures don’t also come along with the pesky downsides of high temps and frequent travel. One major summer hack to try is peppermint essential oil. Yes – what we normally think of as a winter-only scent has myriad uses this time of year.

Peppermint Essential Oil Spray
To Reduce Stress – Peppermint is one of the many essential oils that provide a sense of calm, which is why many people diffuse it in their homes or apply topically. Just a little spritz will keep stress at bay while on the go too.
To Repel Bugs – The one major downside to summer BBQs and camping trips? Bugs! Peppermint oil can repel mosquitos and more whether you spray it, dab it, or whip up a mixture to keep outside.
To Energize – This oil is unique in that unlike chamomile and lavender which also induce calm, peppermint oil is also known to help revive and energize. Both the cooling sensation and the scent itself will refresh, which is super helpful on long, exhausting summer days. (But don’t forget the water!)
To Cool You Down – Speaking of cooling, since peppermint oil has a cooling effect, it’s great to use as a subtle mist on hot days too. Just make sure to dilute properly and perform a spot test first if you haven’t used a spray with peppermint in it before.
To Relieve Sunburns – Let’s hope you’ve all been practicing proper sun care with all the sunscreen tips I’ve shared in the past, but hey – it happens: the dreaded sunburn. If you need relief from an irritating burn, spritz it on as a natural sunburn spray. The cooling effect will provide instant relief, and the healing properties of peppermint will speed recovery.

Fill a spray bottle with water and add two drops of peppermint essential oil for every two ounces of water. Toss in your bag to keep on hand!

Next time you’ve got perfectly good mascara at the bottom of that container here’s what you do:

1. Tightly secure the lid to your mascara.
2. Submerge it in a bowl of warm water. Think almost just before boiling but not quite – you don’t want to run the risk of ruining the product with excessive heat.
3. Wait 3-5 minutes.
4. Dry it off and let cool for a few minutes.
5. Give it a try!

We’ve all done it — we find a new perfume we like with the perfect scent. We’ll be getting ready for work, or school, or a night out, and can’t wait to spritz it on… And boom. Sometimes you just get a little heavy-handed and put WAY too much perfume on. Now, instead of that light enhancing aroma, it smells like you poured the whole bottle over your body. The simplest solution - This is one of the easiest and quickest ways to dilute your scent back to that perfect amount. Grab your trusty bottle of rubbing alcohol or witch hazel, dip a cotton ball into it, and apply on the affected area. This method saves money too, since the tools cost a few bucks at most.
From the pantry - Just like a lot of other natural beauty routines, you can often find the perfectremedy right in your kitchen cabinet. If you’ve got time on your hands, try making a paste out of equal parts baking soda and warm water. Apply to skin, let sit for a few minutes, then wash away. The baking soda in the paste will suck up some of the scent and give you a clean slate.
On the go - Say you’re not at home when you commit this dreaded offense, so you can’t go grab rubbing alcohol or vinegar from the cabinet. Enter lotion. Dab on some unscented lotion that you probably have in your bag already (the travel size Everyday Lotion from EOS is great on the go). Use a Q-tip to spot apply, and rub it in – the lotion will remove some of the scent.
You could also try these convenient on-the-go T.N. Dickinson Witch Hazel pads, or even and sanitizer like this one from ULTA. They’re both portable and come in handy when you’re out of the house.
On your clothes - Now we know how to remove perfume from skin, but what if it got onto your clothes? First try hanging the clothes for a few hours, preferably outdoors in the sun or in a well-ventilated space. If the smell lingers, throw them in the wash with a cup of white vinegar and a few tablespoons of baking soda. They two ingredients will interact with each other, bubbling up and creating powerhouse suds to wash away the scent. It’s an inexpensive solution to neutralize scents and clean clothes at the same time.
For serious cases - Say you’ve tried all of the above and you STILL can’t get that extra fragrance off you. If your perfume is so strong that you just want to hop in the shower, wash it all away, and start all over, make sure you use the right body wash!
