I’ve gotten a lot of good feedback from you all on my career transition and resume tips posts, but these won’t help if you don’t know if you really should pursue your dream. It’s a scary thought when you have an idea, a feeling, or some indication that you need to go for it, yet no idea how. You can define your own future by using your talents and passion to both fulfill you and make the world a better place. If these 10 things represent you and your dream – whether it is to create art or start a business – then maybe it’s time to go for it!

1. A sense of urgency – When people have their heart set on something, they sense the urgency. Even if no one else thinks it’s urgent that you follow your dream, that internal sense means that it’s of value and importance. Urgency alone takes ideas and turns them into plans.
2. It benefits the greater good – There is no reason not to do something good for the world! You don’t have to work at these five charities to make your mark. But knowing that your calling benefits someone other yourself is a reason to pursue it. No longer are you thinking just of YOU, but the bigger picture.
3. The world needs it – Not only does your dream benefit the greater good, but the world needs it. No pressure, but we all have the ability to change the world. Whether it’s the next great American novel or just how awesome you are at customer service – there’s something to contribute. If you aren’t sure whether the world needs what you have to offer, just think for a sec: What’s the world like without it? How will it be better with it? I think you’ve found your answer.
4. It reps you perfectly – While it’s important to consider your future both financially and realistically for a career move, it’s also ideal to choose a job that reflects your personality and skillset – even if unconventional. Take it from me – my job is in no way traditional! We should all have the chance to pursue dreams as unique as us.
5. Somebody doesn’t approve – This isn’t a reason alone – there are a lot of things that we humans have good reason not to approve of – but here’s the thing: There is always someone who won’t approve. Too often we let that stop us. Instead, we should let that fuel us. Haters come and go but your supporters will always be there cheering you own – I know that firsthand.
6. You can’t get it off the brain – True, not all obsessions are healthy or will lead to landing a dream job. We can all think of a few of those, right? But when I first started out, I just wanted a way to express myself and create art. Those things were never not on my mind. The little things we ignore while making a living are the biggest things.
7. You envision success – Not every dream turns into a reality. I believe you can make it happen, but you need to envision it from a few different angles. You can’t put your idea out there and expect it to be an overnight success. You have to know how and why this idea/dream/passion specifically could be IT and be willing to work tirelessly as well.
8. Everyone you meet can sense it – You know when you meet people and can immediately see what makes them tick? Those first impressions say a lot. If your friends and even acquaintances can easily tell what inspires you – even if it’s just loosely related to your dream job or industry – it’s a good indicator that you’re passionate enough to make it happen.
9. You’ll regret it if you don’t – Of course, no one wants to live with regrets. At any point in time, there are probably plenty of things on that bucket list that you think you’ll regret if you don’t do. If you’ve got a dream, then this alone will help get your you-know-what in gear.
10. There is no alternative – Dreamers, you know what I’m getting at here – if you’re an artist or a writer or a musician (the list is truly endless and not limited to art) – then you know this feeling. Just the thought of doing anything else makes you uneasy. In this case, you have it easy – some people search all their lives for their calling; you already know what it is. Now you just need to do something about it.
